Bullet Bra
Bullet bras oftentimes flash back images of the most popular pop sensation, Madonna. But this type of brassiere had been around already way before she started showing them off in her performances around the 1990’s.
Bullet bras first made its appearance and were made known in the 1940’s. It featured a pointed and cone-like cup that generated voluptuous results. The bullet bra became totally popular when Hollywood stars started to wear them. The A-list celebrities include Marilyn Monroe, Lana Turner, and Jane Russell. This brassiere created a busty shape effect called as the “Sweater Girl” kind-of-look. It was referred to as the “Sweater Girl” because of how sweaters clung to its appealing shape and accentuated every woman’s asset.
Typically, a bullet bra was made of satin and nylon. Majority of the creations then had circular stitching, while there are few designs that came with spokes in the middle of the cups and stitched outward. Bras then had no underwire or padding but were carefully crafted for exceptional support lifting women’s breasts to new dimensions. Also called as torpedo or a cone bra, the bullet bra exuded a silhouette that defined some part of the era between the 40’s and the 50’s.
Like any season, fashion changes every now and then. Due to the drastic changes in styles, the bullet bra fell out of line with the fashion industry in the 60’s. All of the bra companies and manufacturers literally switched directions and created new line of brassieres with underwire and padding. Choices of fabric and materials also changed, and so were the cone-shaped cups that women started to get used to in the 40’s. In the later part of 19060’s and beginning of the 70’s, women’s tastes and preferences of undergarments eventually changed as well. After bearing the underwired brassieres in the 60’s, they were looking out for a more natural and comfortable look. Most of the women then opted for what was customary, or at least, something that resulted to a very natural look. The bullet bra then dimmed in time, shying away from the limelight.
